When a Hurricane Targets Your Event Location — Simply Persevere!

It was rough waters for the team at the International BoatBuilders’ Exhibition and Conference (IBEX) leading up to its show this past September 19–21, in Tampa, Florida. Hurricane Harvey had just finished pounding the marine industry in southern Texas. As soon as IBEX weathered that storm, it was faced with Hurricane Irma, which began targeting IBEX’s event location just one week ahead of the show opening in Tampa. With two category 4–5 hurricanes hitting the marine industry within just a few weeks, a big question loomed over IBEX — to cancel or not to cancel?

Too close or not too close? How do you handle the additional distractions of an approaching hurricane on your year-long, hard-planned trade event? Our client, the International BoatBuilders’ Exhibition and Conference, faced the tough decision of whether or not to shut their show down early in Tampa this past October as Hurricane Matthew turned our media into a 24-hour hurricane watch and hundreds of thousands of Florida and East Coast residents evacuated their homes for safer shores. hurricane-matthew-path While Tampa was secure from the spiraling threat of the hurricane, a boating show such as IBEX was packed with both exhibitors and attendees who needed to get back to boarding their homes and evacuating their businesses and families.
